The White House has declined to accept a ceasefire proposed by China in Ukraine

The Biden administration declared their opposition to China's proposal for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine on Thursday, asserting that a break in hostilities would be to Russia's benefit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is planning to hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an attempt to mediate a peace treaty between the two countries, that have been in conflict for more than one year due to Russia's aggression. John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council, informed the press that the administration believes a ceasefire could be beneficial for Ukraine.

It might appear that a ceasefire is a positive step, but in reality it would be tantamount to legitimizing Russia's takeover of Ukraine. A ceasefire would give Russia the opportunity to make their forces in Ukraine even stronger; they could rearm, regroup, and be able to launch another attack whenever they wanted.

The United States has expressed disapproval of a ceasefire in Ukraine, as it would equate to affirming Russian accomplishments and would breach the UN Charter, stated White House representative John Kirby.

Kirby declared the White House to be in favor of a conversation between Xi and Zelensky, yet cautioned Beijing against taking a pro-Russian attitude.

Xi is arranged to go to Moscow to have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is thought that the Chinese leader has also made contact with Zelensky, yet information regarding that was uncertain. On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang conversed with Ukraine's Dmytro Kuleba in a telephone conversation.

The representative of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not go as far as to turn down a truce but agreed with Kirby's opinion that any settlement must not be advantageous to Russia.

The spokesperson declared that if China genuinely wants to help Ukraine regain its sovereignty, then they would be more than happy to accept it. Furthermore, they added that any agreement that ignores Ukraine's right to self-determination is not a real peace deal. Hence, they will continue to encourage China, as they have done previously, to join other nations in pressuring Putin to pull out his forces.

For more than 12 months, the Biden administration, the European Union, and the UK have been providing Ukraine with arms as the conflict has caused immense damage in the Eastern European nation. The United States has already given out a substantial amount of military and humanitarian support, worth around $100 billion. It is believed that over 100,000 combatants have died on both sides, and millions of people have had to flee Ukraine.

Russia, having taken over Crimea in 2014, now holds sway over much of eastern Ukraine, where most inhabitants are of Russian descent and often prefer to side with Moscow.
