Border Patrol Apprehends Four Sex Offenders at Southern Border

Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens confirmed that four illegal migrants, including individuals with convictions for crimes against children, were apprehended at the southern border in a single day this week.

Arrests of Convicted Sex Offenders

Yesterday, United States Border Patrol (USBP) agents made four arrests of convicted sex offenders. The charges against these individuals include "sexual abuse of a child," "rape by force/fear," "indecency with a child and aggravated sexual assault," and "indecency with a child, exposes." Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens shared this information on Twitter.

Increase in Sex Offender Encounters

The number of sex offenders encountered by border authorities has significantly increased under the Biden administration. In 2019, 58 sex offenders were arrested, but that number jumped to 156 in 2020 and 488 in 2021. This spike in encounters comes at a time when there is already a record high number of migrant encounters at the border.

Concerns Raised by Congressman August Pfluger

Republican Congressman August Pfluger from Texas expressed his concerns about the situation at the border. He criticized the fact that Border Patrol agents, who are responsible for finding sex offenders, rapists, murderers, and violent criminals, are being assigned administrative duties instead of actively pursuing these individuals. Pfluger also highlighted the overwhelming numbers at the border and expressed his disbelief that nothing is being done to address the issue.

Record-Breaking Number of Migrant Encounters

According to Customs and Border Protection, a record-breaking 2.4 million illegal migrants were encountered by border authorities in fiscal year 2022. The Biden administration has also utilized the parole authority to allow at least 541,000 migrants into the country without visas.

Concerns about "Gotaways" and Title 42

Critics are raising concerns about the high number of "gotaways," or migrants who enter the country illegally but are not apprehended. According to a report, there were nearly 600,000 gotaways in 2022. The situation is further complicated by the expiration of Title 42, a COVID emergency rule that allowed authorities to swiftly deport migrants back to Mexico. The Biden administration had attempted to end Title 42 multiple times, and it finally expired on May 11.

Overflow of Migrants in Border States

Border states are sending migrants to northern states, specifically Democrat-run cities like New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, due to frustration with the influx of migrants. In New York City alone, over 90,000 migrants have arrived since April of the previous year. Currently, around 55,000 migrants are being housed in the city, leading to overcrowding in homeless shelters and complaints from Mayor Eric Adams about the burden on the city.
