Controversy Sparks on Airwaves Following Appointment of Special Counsel for Hunter Biden

Last week, the prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, was appointed as a special counsel.

Delaware's U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who has been investigating Hunter Biden on financial and other matters for years, received this new status after a plea deal on tax evasion and gun charges faced obstacles in federal court.

This development has sparked reactions from various figures involved in the politically-charged inquiry.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel, John Weiss, in response to a request made by Weiss.

This designation will enable Weiss to bring charges outside of his district more easily.

Garland stated that he made this decision after considering the exceptional circumstances of the case and determining that it is in the public interest.

Republicans are criticizing the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, son of President-elect Joe Biden.

Many Republicans had previously called for a special counsel, but now they are denigrating the appointment.

They argue that it follows a plea deal that they consider favorable to Hunter Biden and raises new concerns about the Biden family's finances.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, has accused the Biden Justice Department of obstructing congressional oversight regarding the alleged corruption of the Biden family.

Comer claims that evidence has been presented to the American people, but the Justice Department is attempting to impede the investigation.

Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, stated during an interview on Fox News that the appointment of a special counsel increases the importance of an impeachment inquiry against President Trump.

Blackburn argued that the special counsel would have subpoena power, making the inquiry more effective.

She also criticized the choice of David Weiss as the special counsel, describing him as a collaborator rather than a prosecutor.

Former President Donald Trump has issued a statement regarding the appointment of a special counsel as the 2024 election cycle gains momentum.

Trump's spokesperson criticized the special counsel for not bringing charges after a four-year investigation and accused him of trying to move the case to a more Democrat-friendly venue.

The spokesperson called for Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and their supporters, including the media, to face consequences if the special counsel is truly independent.

White House adviser Steve Benjamin declined to comment on the special appointment related to Hunter Biden during a weekend appearance on MSNBC.

He stated that the criminal case is a personal matter for Hunter Biden.

However, Democrats in Congress defended the Department of Justice and the president on Sunday, speaking out in support of them.

The White House has not provided any comment on the Hunter Biden special counsel investigation, according to a top Biden advisor, Steve Benjamin.

Meanwhile, Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the oversight panel, stated that it is important to allow the justice system to run its course and that it may not be preferred by either side.

Rep. Dan Goldman, a Democrat from New York, spoke on CNN about the special counsel appointment and emphasized the importance of the Department of Justice's independence.

He argued that Congress should cease investigating a private citizen and abandon the attempt to connect President Biden to Hunter Biden's actions, as there is no evidence to support such claims.

In a recent statement, a congressman acknowledged that if Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has committed any crimes, he should face charges.

The congressman, who identifies as a Democrat, emphasized that he was making this statement to highlight the perceived double standard among elected Republicans.

He argued that Republicans would not be willing to make a similar statement regarding former President Donald Trump and the alleged crimes he is currently facing in court.

Gary Shapley, an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent, has come forward as a whistleblower claiming that the criminal inquiry into Hunter Biden has been delayed.

Shapley recently appeared on CNN and argued that the announcement of a special counsel in the investigation goes against previous claims that the prosecutor had the authority to bring charges.

He sees this as a vindication of his claims.

Hunter Biden's legal team has expressed confidence that he will not face new criminal charges following the appointment of a special counsel.

Attorney Abbe Lowell stated that there is no new evidence to be found and that the only change will be increased scrutiny on existing charges.
