President Biden Seeks Approval for Housing Program for Illegal Immigrants
President Joe Biden is seeking approval from Congress for a housing program for illegal immigrants at the southern border as part of his $40 billion emergency funding request. The plan aims to provide housing for illegal immigrants, allowing them to come and go as they please while the Department of Homeland Security expedites their legal process. If approved, the funding would enable the government to process these individuals within three weeks.
Biden Administration Introduces Housing Program for Monitoring Illegal Immigrants
The Biden administration has introduced a housing program aimed at monitoring illegal immigrants without detaining them. This program is intended to alleviate the strain on migrant shelters near the border. Following the decision to halt the detention of illegal immigrants in 2021, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased its use of GPS monitoring and regular phone check-ins with released asylum seekers.
According to a DHS official, President Biden's proposed housing program would allow undocumented immigrants to leave the facility during the day before returning to check in and stay overnight. The official emphasized that this program is not considered family detention.
Criticism and Border Crisis
Earlier this year, the president faced criticism from the Left for considering the return of detaining illegal immigrant families, a policy that he had previously criticized former President Donald Trump for. This apparent reversal on the issue coincided with the end of Title 42, a public health order implemented by Trump that required illegal immigrants to wait in Mexico for their asylum claims due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to The Texas Tribune, illegal immigration has been on the rise under President Biden's administration. Despite a temporary decrease in illegal immigrant apprehensions in June, there was a significant surge of 30% in July. This increase has led to calls from both the Right and some members of the Left for President Biden to address the border crisis and take control of the situation.
In June, there was a slight decrease in arrests of illegal immigrants at the US-Mexico border, which was a record low under President Biden's administration. However, the number of arrests in June was still higher compared to the numbers seen during the Trump administration. US Customs and Border Protection arrested just under 100,000 illegal immigrants in June. However, this number spiked to over 130,000 in July. In the Tucson, Arizona sector, around 40,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in July alone, setting a 15-year record for the sector according to CBP data.
